Rathbun Lake is a reservoir located in southern Iowa, United States. It is situated mainly in Appanoose County, about 10 miles northwest of the town of Centerville. The lake is a popular destination for fishing, boating, camping, and other outdoor activities.  Rathbun Lake is actually part of 3 counties that not only includes Appanoose County, but also Monroe County and Wayne County.  Rathbun Lake is often referred to as Iowa’s Ocean. 

Rathbun Lake was created in 1969 by damming the Chariton River. It has a surface area of over 11,000 acres and a maximum depth of 65 feet. The lake is home to a variety of fish species, including catfish, bass, crappie, and walleye, making it a popular spot for anglers.

There are several private and public campgrounds and recreational areas around the lake, including Honey Creek Resort State Park, which offers a variety of amenities such as a lodge, cabins, RV sites, and a golf course. The lake is also surrounded by public hunting land, making it a popular destination for hunting enthusiasts.
